Water damage claims and your homeowner’s insurance

Sherrie Howe • January 23, 2021

If you have water damage, do you know how to make a claim in the Lehigh Valley area?

Did you know that water damage claims are the most frequent and 2nd largest claims per year outnumbering wind and hail damage? If you don’t file the claim properly, it can be denied leaving you in a bind.

These are things to do to make the claim an easier process:

Insurance companies often have deadlines for filing claims, so report the damage immediately so they can make-arrangements for your claims or an adjuster to visit your water damaged site.

Make a detailed list of your damaged property. If you can, take photos/videos of your damaged property so your agent or adjuster can determine the cause and effect of the water damage.

Protecting your things from water damage is important, so only make temporary repairs to do that if your home hasn’t been inspected yet. Some insurance companies will deny claims if they see final repairs were done before they inspected it.

Keep your receipts - If your insurance company allows repairs before the inspection, make sure to keep all of your receipts so you can be properly reimbursed for the materials and repairs.

Be available - If you are hiring a contractor, be available at all times so they can go in when needed and talk with the adjusted if needed. If the repairs are delayed because the contractor can’t get in, it could jeopardize part or all of the claim as further damage could set in during that time.

These incidences of water damage are commonly covered by your insurance:

  • Roof damage due rain, snow or ice dams from windstorms.
  • Plumbing, but only if the damage is caused by a sudden burst pipe or plumbing system blockages.
  • If there is a fire in your home and you have fire sprinklers that are activated or fire extinguisher usage, then the ending result will usually be covered by your insurance.
  • Destroyed plumbing due to someone entering your home and destroys plumbing and leaves the water running.

If you need an assessment of water damage, Call Restoration 1 Lehigh Valley for an accurate and detailed estimate of water damages.
